Sylvester Oromoni: Autopsy report shows he was not murdered

The autopsy report which was conducted on the corpse of late Sylvester Oromoni,  alleged victim of bullying, at the Dowen College, Lagos,is out.

The report however, exonerated the school’s House Master and other students  alleged to have a hand in the murder.

Consequently, the suspects who have been in Police custody at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence  Department, Yaba, for over three weeks, were released on bail last week Thursday.

Recall that the deceased, who was a Junior Secondary School 2 student of the school and a boarder, was rushed to his parents home in Warri, Delta State two months ago, due to some injuries he sustained while playing football, according to the school. But his parents claimed that their son revealed that the injuries were inflicted on him by some senior students who wanted to make him join their cult group.

Late Sylvester, died few days before his 12th birthday. He died from internal injuries  which included kidney enlargement.

In the course of investigation into the alleged murder, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Hakeem Odumosu, revealed that the autopsy report released did not indicate that late Sylvester was murdered.

He however said that the case was still under investigation, which would included a toxicology test that needed to be conducted  on the corpse.

He said,

We have gone through the medical aspect  which is the post mortem.

Post mortem was carried out in Delta and Lagos states.  The first one done in Delta State was only witnessed by parents of the deceased.

“But after I held a meeting with the parties concerned, at the instance and directive of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu  and my Inspector- General of Police, IGP Alkali Usman Baba, the second post mortem was carried out in Lagos.

“The corpse was brought from Delta State to Lagos, where the Post mortem was carried out with all the parties involved , that is : parents of the deceased, parents of the students accused, the school authority  and government. These were the four parties that witnessed the post mortem. And the result is out.

“The report of the Post Mortem did not bring out the issue of murder on anybody.

“Besides the result of the autopsy, the court order that we got has elapsed  and we have released the house master and others on bail,  because there was nothing that indicted them of murder.

“It is only a murder case that is not bailable. Every other offences are bailable. They have been in custody for more than twenty days and that is infringing on their fundamental human rights. Since medical and legal reports have not indicted them so far, I think there is need to allow them have their freedom because bail is not the end of the case.

“Another forensic test known as toxicology , will be carried out on the corpse”Odumosu informed

The toxicology test would reveal the concoction that was allegedly forced into the deceased mouth which peeled his lips. The test would be conducted abroad.

He explained that “Toxicology test was being done in Nigeria before, precisely at the Lagos State medical facility in Lagos Island. But after the EndASRS crisis, it is conducted outside the country.

“Until that one is effectively done, we won’t know the final report. But with the interim report, nothing showed  murder”, AIG Odumosu stated.

Family Of Late Sylvester Oromoni Kicks Against N1million Bail Granted To Suspects

The father of late Sylvester Oromoni has frowned at the bail granted to alleged killers of his son. He wondered what the reason behind the bail was when the 21 days requested by the police for investigation was yet to elapse.

Recall that the deceased was allegedly bullied to death by his seniors for refusing to join cult. The five suspects were arrested but have been granted bail of N1 million naira each, by a Magistrate’s court in Yaba.

The Chief Magistrate, Olatunbosun Adeola, after hearing the bail application filed by the counsel for the defendants, ordered the defendants to produce two sureties each in like sum.

Sylvester’s father said,
“Yesterday I was called that those boys were granted bail by a Magistrate Court in Yaba, Lagos. I said, “why?” I now called the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State and he told me; I was not aware, and that they were not done with the investigation.

I called the DCP in charge of the case who later confirmed to me that the story is true.

But it was a surprise to me that the same judge gave them 21 days which expires on the 28 of this month when the police requested for the remand order. The court granted 21 days to keep those boys.

And the 21 days have not expired, and the court granted them bail. I am calling on President Muhammadu Buhari, the Lagos State Government and the Inspector General of Police to please take note.

Secondly, the police said they are not done with the investigation, that granting the boys bail will not help their investigation, they are getting more facts.

And they were even planning that after the 21 days if they are not done with their investigation, they will ask for an extension. I am surprised that the court granted them bail when the date given has not elapsed.

I am not a lawyer but what the family is saying is that they should allow the police to conclude their investigation. I am not saying that they should not be granted bail but it is the court that gave the police 21 days”

He was a son, grandson, brother, cousin, uncle to his little nieces, he was a friend , he meant everything to us and Yes he was only a child an innocent child . He was taken from us from in the most gruesome of manner beaten by senior 5 boys in his hostel in Dowen College lekki Lagos state. He was tortured by these boys in his school and compelled to silence otherwise they threatened to kill him.

This torture and beatings lead to injuries unimaginable and the school authorities without proper duty of care took his agony at face value and claimed he had a fall playing soccer. Without proper investigation or care they called his parents to pick him up. The family upon seeing their once healthy vibrant child knew this pains and injuries were beyond a domestic fall. The child could barely articulate words and move without these heart wrenching painful sounds.

Sylvester Jnr reported to the family he did not fall as alleged by the school. He said he was beaten and tortured by 5 senior students and mentioned their names. The students are from influential families and the school is trying to bury the case.
Sign and help us find justice for Sylvester Oromoni Jnr. It’s our fight he could be your son , your brother, your cousin. #justiceforsylvester.”

“#JusticeForSylvester: How did 12-year-old student Sylvester Oromoni die?

The death of a 12-year-old student, Sylvester Oromoni, of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, sparked outrage online when it was learned that he was allegedly bullied and beaten to death by other students at the boarding school. A viral video shared by the family has shown how Sylvester was writhing in pain while bleeding from his mouth. His lips appeared swollen and his teeth looked broken.

According to one of his relatives, the deceased mentioned the names of five persons, whom he said were allegedly responsible for his injuries before he finally died on Tuesday 30.11.2021.

In its response the student’s death, the Dowen College school’s authorities in a statement claimed the deceased sustained injuries while playing football and was given immediate medical attention by the school’s resident nurse. The school denied that Sylvester had been bullied or attacked by some students in the school and said it had carried out a preliminary investigation, where it’s officials claimed that there was no case of bullying, adding that it has policies that are strongly anti-cultism.

The deceased, according to his parents in media reports had also alleged that he was given a substance to drink by the ‘bullies’.

The efforts by the school’s administrators are not enough and authorities are silent. Investigations must be done to discover what really happened to Sylvester.

  1. Did the school do enough to protect Sylvester?
  2. How were the injuries that led to his death sustained?
  3. Was the school negligent in protecting its students?

There are so many questions and not enough answers.

We need the police to act immediately and investigate the circumstances and events that led to his death. We’re asking the Lagos Commissioner for Education, Folashade Adefisayo and officials of the Lagos State Universal Education Board, and the Federal Ministry of Education to probe allegations of bullying and negligence?

We’re asking for a thorough and transparent investigation and prosecution of those found to be culpable in this tragic incident.

Social protection is particularly important for children, in view of this crime, we also throw in our concern for children with disabilities to ensure the protection of children is inclusive of them.

Justice must be served and seen to be served for 12 year old Sylvester and his family.”

Regina Daniels reacts to the murder of the twelve year old Dowen student

Popular Nollywood actress, Regina Daniels has lent her voice to the outcry against the murder of Sylvester Oromoni, a 12-year old who was allegedly beaten to the point of death by his school mates.

The mother of one condemned the killing, as she empathised with the family of the deceased. She regretted that such acts were being perpetrated in schools and offenders were going scot free.
She advised boarding schools to install CCTVs in their schools to monitor students’ activities.
She finally insisted Dowen should explain what happened and ensure justice is done.

She wrote:
“I can’t begin to imagine the pain the family is going through knowing the kind of agony their child passed through.

“This is so sad and traumatizing for not only his family but the world at large.

“This barbaric act is still being practised in most schools among students and they keep getting away with it but not this time.

“I have been so devastated and all that could come to my mind while watching the video is ‘what if it’s my child?’

“The perpetrators of this wicked act might go free if there’s no evidence to prove their guilt and later cause more havoc but with a collective effort we must all make sure justice is served for Sylvester.

“A boarding should always have CCTV in most areas to monitor the kids. The school needs to render a reasonable explanation and make sure the culprits are brought to justice.”
