Alleged elimination of Igboho: I was quoted out of context — Spokesman

Lawyer to the Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemi, popularly called Sunday Igboho, Yomi Alliyu, SAN, yesterday, has dismissed a social media report of an alleged plan to eliminate the activist in Benin Republic prison. He said that it’s the Federal Government of Nigeria led by President Muhammadu Buhari that is keeping Igboho in prison and not the Benin Republic Government.

He strictly warned those “flying the kite” to stop spreading such speculations. He was certain that Igboho would regain freedom soon.

Alliyu, in a chat with vanguard, said: “I don’t have knowledge of a threat to his life. I speak with his wife regularly but I don’t have such knowledge of plans to eliminate him.

“We have persuaded his boys and Yoruba youths not to take laws into their hands. We told them that if they start killing and burning, they will be killing their kith and kin. We urged them to keep their cool. However, if anybody is flying such a kite to know the feelings of what will happen if Sunday Igboho is murdered in prison, I advise that such a person should have a rethink.

“I don’t think anyone is planning that except the enemies of this government. The only way this Government can wash its hands off this evil intention is to release Sunday Igboho now because they (FG) are the ones keeping him in prison and not the Benin Republic Government.

“If anything should happen to Sunday Igboho, we will hold the Federal Government responsible. That is why we have been appealing to Yoruba youths not to take laws into their hands because we are optimistic that Sunday Igboho will be freed and that the alleged plan to kill him is a mere rumour. I don’t see any threat to his life.”

Olayomi Koiki, the spokesman to Yoruba nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has said that he was quoted out of context on the alleged plot to eliminate Igboho in prison.

Koiki, when contacted personally on Wednesday, denied saying that the Federal Government wanted to eliminate Igboho.

He said: “I was quoted out of context. I was referring to Prof. Banjo Akintoye in my statement.

“I said, if they are planning evil against Prof. Banji Akintoye and others, they are only trying but God’s power is superior.”

“I further said enemies are trying to eliminate Prof. Akintoye (not Igboho) to silence the Yoruba nation agenda.”

“But on the issue of Igboho, the Government of Nigeria is indirectly instigating his continued detention in Cotonou.

“Benin Republic judicial system is no longer working again and we are going to fight for our right to the end.

“Igboho cannot be silenced like the way they killed MKO Abiola, Funsho Williams, unjustly.

“The Benin Republic President Patrice Talon is working continuously with the Federal Government to extradite Igboho to Nigeria.

“All Yoruba leaders must continue to fight. Igboho must get justice.”

Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has accused the Federal government of Nigeria of plotting to eliminate him in the Benin Republic.

The 49-year-old Yoruba leader was arrested by operatives of Brigade Criminelle (Criminal Brigade) on July 19 in Cotonou.

He has been in detention for the past 161 days despite efforts to get him released.

Olayomi Koiki, spokesman of Igboho, in a podcast on Tuesday evening, alleged that the Benin Republic President Patrice Talon has allied with the Federal Government to extradite Igboho to Nigeria.

He said: “So many people have heard rumours in the past 24/48 hours. We know that God almighty is watching.

“If they are trying, they cannot be successful. If they are planning evil against Prof. Banji Akintoye and others, they are only trying but God’s power is superior.

“The enemies are trying to eliminate him (Igboho). Their plan is to eliminate him so that the Yoruba Nation agenda will be silenced, but God has shown that he is above them.

“If you think the legal route is what will set Igboho free, then we are wasting our time.

“Benin Republic judicial system is not working. Look at the way his case has been prolonged.

“I’ve spoken with our lawyer in Benin, and he told me that only the president can set him free.

“Now, diplomacy cannot work. We have to fight for our rights.

“See the way they killed MKO Abiola, Funsho Williams – they were killed unjustly.

“We’ve issued so many ultimata for Igboho’s release, but nothing has happened.”

Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho, has been reported really sick and diagnosed with possible kidney or lungs illness.

One of his lawyers, Yomi Aliyyu, disclosed this in an interview with BBC Yoruba. He stressed that his client did not have the illness but only developed it in Benin Republic prison custody.

Yomi went on to say that Igboho was so ill that he has been rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Recall that Igboho has been in a detention facility in Benin Republic, after his arrest on July 16, 2021.
His lawyer cried out about his need for urgent medical attention as the ailment only came about in prison.

He said, “Igboho was not diagnosed with this sickness before he was arrested in Cotonou. It was so critical that they had to rush him to the hospital.

“I can’t tell if he has been returned to the prison from the hospital but what I know is, he’s battling ill health and it seems his kidney and lungs are already being affected.

“Even though I cannot tell which part of his body the sickness has really affected, I know it has to do with his internal organs.”

Some sources in the umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, Ilana Omo Oodua, also confirmed the development.

“Yes, he is ill and his kidney appears affected. We are not very sure yet. Another test result is expected for confirmation. We are working on that and I can assure you that he is in safe hands,” one of the sources said.

The spokesperson for Ilana Oodua, Maxwell Adeleye, said, “Expect our reaction soon. But the government should be warned that nothing must happen to Igboho.”
