Police torture Nigerian business man to death in South Africa

Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA), on Thursday, expressed shock over the murder of a Nigerian, Kingsley Ezeh, whose death was allegedly caused by the South African police.

According to the President General of NICASA, Benjamin Okoli, Mr Ezeh’s death on Tuesday was circumstantial in the hands of members of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).

According to him, members of the JMPD had invaded Mr Ezeh’s tyre shop in the late evening of January 4, where they allegedly manhandled while trying to extract information from him.

He also accused the police officers of choking the deceased, leading him to his death.
Mr Ezeh was said to be going about his normal business activity when metro police officers with an unmarked black-BMW vehicle arrived conveying his brother that they arrested earlier at a different location.

The NICASA boss said, “What led to the death of Ezeh on January 4, remains a mystery which will be unravelled by police investigation.

“The shop is fitted with a CCTV camera, which we believe will be instrumental and helpful in unravelling the case.

“From indication and the brother’s account, they choked the deceased for several minutes, at the same time asking him to vomit what they assumed he had swallowed; the choking caused asphyxiation.

“Two other Nigerians in the area had allegedly accused same group of Metro Police officers of attacking them only few months ago using plastic bags to cover their heads and they almost died.

“Both Nigerians maintained that nothing was found on them at the time of the attack against them; the police stopped them while driving, after searching their cars and found nothing, insisted on extorting them certain amount.”

According to him, because they didn’t pay the bribe, they were attacked and nearly killed with the plastic used to suffocate them by the said Metro officers.
They also accused the Metro officers of stealing their phones and money.

“We are currently discussing with these two Nigerians, to see how we can add their case to this death as evidence of a pattern of attack by these group of Metro Police against Nigerians.

“The Metro Police had claimed that the late Ezeh ingested substance they suspected is narcotic when they came into his shop and they claimed he had suffocated by the substance he ingested.

“Paramedics were called to the shop where he was confirmed dead on the scene; the leadership of NICASA monitored the situation and ensured that protocols are followed to secure evidence,” he added.

He described Mr Ezeh’s death as an unnecessary and systemic xenophobic way of killing Nigerian nationals by the members of the South African police.

He went on to say that the police could have arrested and prosecuted the deceased, if he was a criminal. He said the deceased’s death was just one out of many other similar cases where Nigerians are killed without justification.
Hence he urged the Nigerian community to stay calm until the association received the result of the post mortem, while following up the casevyo reach a logical conclusion.

Mr Ezeh, a native of Oduma, Aninri Local Government of Enugu State, is survived by his wife and children.

Police boss orders arrest of Lagos estate security guards for ‘delaying’ him

Police boss orders arrest of Lagos estate security guards for ‘delaying’ him

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, ordered the arrest of private security guards who had allegedly delayed and denied him entrance into Brooks Estate, Magodo, Isheri.

Reports have it that the police boss had, in a convoy, gone to meet a “strategic partner at a function” at the estate on Saturday when the incident happened.

A statement from the Lagos State Police Command clarified that the CP did not lock down the estate as speculated on social media.

In the statement titled, ‘Brooks estate not locked down by Lagos CP’, the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, warned private security guards against disregard for police officers.

The statement read, “CP Hakeem Odumosu who was recently promoted to the enviable rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police due to his hard work and commitment to duty, visited the public Estate yesterday, January 1, 2022 to meet a strategic partner at a function after going round, visiting some places in the state to ensure the safety of Lagosians.

“The Commissioner of Police was accompanied by his armed security details and was driven in his official car bearing an official number plate and a pennant, including all the paraphernalia of office.

“On reaching the Estate gate, he was properly introduced notwithstanding the visible security details in uniform including a dispatch rider in his convoy, yet he was prevented from entering the Estate by some overzealous private security guards.

“All appeals to the security men to allow the CP to go to see someone at a function where an urgent matter bordering on security was to be discussed, fell on deaf ears even when they had foreknowledge of his coming.

“In spite of this deliberate humiliation, the senior police officer remained calm. When it became obvious that the security men were going overboard, the CP after about 30 minutes humiliation, ordered the arrest of four of the security men, leaving one.

“However, in order not to make the Estate porous, the Commissioner of Police immediately posted well-armed policemen at the gate to support the security man left behind.”

The PPRO subsequently accused residents of the estate of shutting down the estate.

He said, “A few minutes later, a female resident of the Estate later identified as Adebola Fatiregun who didn’t witness the incident but heard of it, stormed the gate in anger, inciting other residents against the Commissioner of Police and his aides. She was also arrested for inciting violence and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

“All those arrested were taken to the Isheri Police Division where they made statements. They were subsequently released a few minutes after, following the intervention of notable individuals.

“At no time did the Commissioner of Police shut or lock down the Estate. The police boss could not have done that for whatever reason, knowing that the Estate is a residential one.

“Some residents of the Estate in solidarity with the arrested security men, deliberately closed the gate, thereby creating a temporary gridlock. This they did after the CP had left, perhaps to blackmail him and make him release the security men.”

The police cautioned that police officers have freedom of movement and should not be stopping from accessing public places.

“It should be stated here that, the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria provides for freedom of movement. The police in particular are statutorily permitted to enter any public place at any time. The Brooks Estate is a public place and the roads leading into it are highways and as such, no one has the power to prevent police officers in uniform from entering the Estate or any such public places.

“The internal security arrangements of the estates and other public places nonetheless, the statutory powers of the police to have unfettered access to public places must be acknowledged and respected.

“Therefore, managements or authorities of estates in the state are advised to constantly brief their private security guards in this regard. Any restriction deliberately put in the way of the police in any of the estates will not be tolerated. Offenders will be dealt with according to the law, just as the police will not condone any form of embarrassment and recklessness,” Ajisebutu added.

Woman tries to settle dispute, stabs bartender to death

A 32-year-old female fashion designer, Omowumi Oyapitan, has been arrested by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command, for allegedly killing a bartender, Muhammed Ahmed, 30.

The deceased, Ahmed, had reportedly made away with his boss’ N600,000 and went into hiding in a hotel with his friends.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement on Thursday, said the police discovered that the deceased used part of the stolen money to lodge some of his friends in the hotel. He later accused one of them of stealing part of the money.

The police spokesperson said the accusation led to a hot exchange of words between them.

The fashion designer tried to separate the fighting friends but instead got a fist blow from Ahmed.

This annoyed her, so that she broke a bottle and stabbed Ahmed in the neck, leading to his death.

The PPRO said the suspect was arrested following a distress call received by the police at the Onipanu divisional headquarters from the Managing Director of Splendour Guest Inn, Stephen Udo.

Oyeyemi said, “Following the distress call, the DPO, Onipanu division, CSP Bamidele Job, quickly mobilised his men and moved to the scene, where the victim was met in a pool of blood.

“The suspect was promptly arrested, while the victim was rushed to the state hospital, Ota, where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim, who had been in the hotel since Monday, December 27, 2021, was hiding there after stealing the sum of N600,000 from his boss at Hayorlak Hotel, where he was working as a bartender.

“It was further gathered that he used part of the stolen money to lodge some of his friends. He had an altercation with one of those he lodged in the hotel because he accused him of stealing part of his money; the accusation led to a hot exchange of words between them.

“The suspect, who claimed to know the other boy in their street, intervened and the deceased, who was not pleased with her intervention, gave her a fist blow in the mouth. In retaliation, she broke a bottle and used it to stab the deceased in his neck.”

Oyeyemi, however, said the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation and prosecution.

Nwosu’s Arrest: You should apologise to Anglican Church, CAN tells Police

Nwosu’s Arrest: You should apologise to Anglican Church, CAN tells Police

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has said the police are the ones who owe the Anglican Church an apology for the gestapo way in which they had arrested the former Chief-of-Staff to Imo Governor, Uche Nwosu, while he was in church for the outing service of his late mother.

CAN admitted that it would never stop the Police or the security agencies from doing their job which include arresting suspected criminals. It would hovever not permit the desecration of worship centres by operatives.

In a statement on Thursday night signed by Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, the Special Assistant on Media and Communications to the CAN President, the umbrella Christian body did not support the effort by the Imo State CAN Chairman, Reverend Eches Divine-Eches, who tendered an apology to the Anglican church for the disruption of its service during Nwosu’s arrest last Sunday.

Instead, CAN’s national leadership insisted there was no reason for any of its officials to apologize over the incident because the apex Christian body had no part in the horrendous action.

The statement reads, “The National leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) condemns in the strongest terms the arrest of Mr. Uche Nwosu at St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral Umunwokwe village, in the Eziama-Obieri Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State.

“We feel highly embarrassed by this ugly development and feel pained that the Nigeria Police had no respect even for the House of God. We cannot remember whether this act of disrespect for God ever happened before in our country.

“The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has nothing to apologize for what the police did because we were never and would never be party to their horrendous action.

“The Police that did the disgraceful thing should appropriately apologise without giving any excuse. We expect them to be more circumspect in the performance of their duties.

“We are not asking the Police or the security agencies not to do their constitutional duties, but the idea of desecrating the House of God in doing so is totally unacceptable, unfortunate and reprehensible.

“In view of the foregoing, we urge the Inspector General of Police to call his men to order and continue to respect all houses of worship, whether church or mosque. This type of act should never happen again in our country.”

UK police apologise for killing of footballer Atkinson

UK police apologise for killing of footballer Atkinson

Six months after one of the officers of a police force in western England was jailed over the death of ex-Premier League footballer, Dalian Atkinson, the force formally apologised on Monday to the family of the deceased.

Atkinson was 48 when he died in hospital in 2016 about an hour after policeman Benjamin Monk shot at him three times — including once for 33 seconds — and kicked him twice in the head.

The officer, Monk was sentenced in June to eight years in prison for causing the death of the former Aston Villa star, with a judge saying jail time was necessary to maintain public confidence in the police.

Pippa Mills, who became head of West Mercia Police in September, wrote to Atkinson’s family saying she was “deeply sorry for the devastating impact” of Monk’s conduct.

“A police uniform does not grant officers immunity to behave unlawfully or to abuse their powers,” she wrote in the letter.

Mills acknowledged that Atkinson’s rights were breached under the European Convention on Human Rights.

In reaction, the family’s lawyer, Kate Maynard, said in a statement that the official apology was “welcomed and overdue”.

“With the first conviction of a serving police officer on a manslaughter charge connected with his policing duties in over 30 years, it is hoped that this will serve as a deterrent, and also embolden those who seek police accountability,” she said.

Atkinson died in hospital after police were called to his father’s home in Telford, north of Birmingham, in August 2016.

The judge at Monk’s trial discovered that the mental state of Atkinson — who also played for Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich Town and Real Sociedad in Spain — “had suddenly and dramatically deteriorated”.

He ruled that the Monk’s actions had constituted excessive force.

During the hearings, it was also found out that Monk had twice been found guilty of gross misconduct but allowed to keep his job
