Alleged elimination of Igboho: I was quoted out of context — Spokesman

Lawyer to the Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemi, popularly called Sunday Igboho, Yomi Alliyu, SAN, yesterday, has dismissed a social media report of an alleged plan to eliminate the activist in Benin Republic prison. He said that it’s the Federal Government of Nigeria led by President Muhammadu Buhari that is keeping Igboho in prison and not the Benin Republic Government.

He strictly warned those “flying the kite” to stop spreading such speculations. He was certain that Igboho would regain freedom soon.

Alliyu, in a chat with vanguard, said: “I don’t have knowledge of a threat to his life. I speak with his wife regularly but I don’t have such knowledge of plans to eliminate him.

“We have persuaded his boys and Yoruba youths not to take laws into their hands. We told them that if they start killing and burning, they will be killing their kith and kin. We urged them to keep their cool. However, if anybody is flying such a kite to know the feelings of what will happen if Sunday Igboho is murdered in prison, I advise that such a person should have a rethink.

“I don’t think anyone is planning that except the enemies of this government. The only way this Government can wash its hands off this evil intention is to release Sunday Igboho now because they (FG) are the ones keeping him in prison and not the Benin Republic Government.

“If anything should happen to Sunday Igboho, we will hold the Federal Government responsible. That is why we have been appealing to Yoruba youths not to take laws into their hands because we are optimistic that Sunday Igboho will be freed and that the alleged plan to kill him is a mere rumour. I don’t see any threat to his life.”

FG planning to eliminate me — Igboho

Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has accused the Federal government of Nigeria of plotting to eliminate him in the Benin Republic.

The 49-year-old Yoruba leader was arrested by operatives of Brigade Criminelle (Criminal Brigade) on July 19 in Cotonou.

He has been in detention for the past 161 days despite efforts to get him released.

Olayomi Koiki, spokesman of Igboho, in a podcast on Tuesday evening, alleged that the Benin Republic President Patrice Talon has allied with the Federal Government to extradite Igboho to Nigeria.

He said: “So many people have heard rumours in the past 24/48 hours. We know that God almighty is watching.

“If they are trying, they cannot be successful. If they are planning evil against Prof. Banji Akintoye and others, they are only trying but God’s power is superior.

“The enemies are trying to eliminate him (Igboho). Their plan is to eliminate him so that the Yoruba Nation agenda will be silenced, but God has shown that he is above them.

“If you think the legal route is what will set Igboho free, then we are wasting our time.

“Benin Republic judicial system is not working. Look at the way his case has been prolonged.

“I’ve spoken with our lawyer in Benin, and he told me that only the president can set him free.

“Now, diplomacy cannot work. We have to fight for our rights.

“See the way they killed MKO Abiola, Funsho Williams – they were killed unjustly.

“We’ve issued so many ultimata for Igboho’s release, but nothing has happened.”

Terrorists’ rockets worrisome — FG

Terrorists’ rockets worrisome — FG

Following the launching of multiple rocket attacks in Maiduguri, Borno state capital, by Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) hours before the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, the Federal Government yesterday said it was worried about terrorists’ ability to fire rockets.

The Federal Government expressed worry on a day Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state cried out for help saying terrorists, armed robbers, bandits and criminal elements had invaded and taken over Kano forests.

It is pertinent to note that hours before the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Thursday, multiple rockets explosions rocked the capital with rockets hitting many houses around Ngomari, Bulumkutu and Ayafe communities near the airport. This reportedly led to a massive deployment of troops to combat ISWAP elements and to foil the attack by the terrorists.

Fielding questions from State House Correspondents after a security council meeting presided by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on the attack, the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Alkali Baba Usman said the ability of the terrorists to strike with rockets was worrisome.

However, the police boss said the terrorists failed to achieve their objectives with the rockets launch.

Flanked by the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the IGP said, “They are launching it in major towns, they are launching it in Maiduguri. It is a concern. And it has been seriously checkmated. There are efforts to continuously checkmate it. What they have done yesterday (Thursday), yes, they have done it, but to a large extent, they have not achieved what they have intended to achieve because of the situation the security agencies particularly the military put in place.”

When asked whether the security agencies have been able to trace the origins of the rockets, the IGP said it had been done before and after the firing incident occurred.

He said, “Yes, it had been done before and even after. Some of those who must have planned and thrown those rockets have been taken out.”

The IGP said that the security agencies were working at improving on what they were already doing “to ensure there is peace, law and order during the Yuletide period and beyond.”

He mentioned President Buhari’s marching orders to security agencies, which, according to him, are always the same.

Explaining, Baba said: “The marching orders are always the same, you have even told Nigerians the marching orders of the President. It has always been the same. There is no space, there is no tolerance to any threat to security. There is no sparing of any terrorists and there must be an intelligence gathering, there must be proactive prevention of crime and there must be checkmating of all those that are involved in criminal activities, whether it is terrorism, banditry or armed robbery or whatever and that is what we are trying to do to the best of our knowledge and ability.”

The Federal Government has also said there was no need to worry over the alleged leaked memo where security intelligence revealed that terrorists have planned to attack the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, during the festive period. It went on to explain that the nature of criminality in the southeast is the reason for the high presence of police on the roads.
However, Nigerians have been accusing security agencies in the southeast of harassing and extorting people at checkpoints.

Comparing the north and the east he said: “Where there are more people you have the problem of policing than where you don’t have. What we have in some of the states(in the north) is a big landmass without actually having too many people.

“In some spaces (in the east) we have too many people in a small place. That means there is human interaction and you need to have to police there much more than what you have where you don’t have that number of population.”

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who led the briefing on the outcome of the security meeting, gave assurance that there was no threat to safety and security in the Federal Capital Territory

Asked about the leaked memo of planned terrorists’ attack, Aregbesola said: “Abuja is secure and very safe. If there was a leak, as you mentioned, it could just be an operational alert that does not require any worry or concern. The Council has mandated us to assure Nigerians of their safety and enduring peace for the period of the festivities.”

The minister said the council had asked them to assure Nigerians that measures were in place to ensure their safety during the Christmas season and beyond.

“The message of the Security Council, through you to Nigerians, is that all measures for the safety and security of the Nigerian people and Nigeria are in place for a successful and happy celebration of the yuletide and the New Year,” he stated.

Ban Big Brother Naija – Onuesoke begs FG

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain and former Delta State gubernatorial aspirant, Chief Sunny Onuesoke, has requested that the Federal Government bans the ongoing and much loved reality television  show, Big Brother Naija.

He made appeal to religious leaders, both Muslim and Christian clerics to join him in the call for ban of BBN on Nigerian televisions.

Onuesoke opined that the programme was immoral and it could corrode the minds of the younger generation, especially teenagers.

He said, “BBNaija is an exhibition of recklessness. We are encouraging it so badly that we allow it to be displayed openly on television. It is an invitation to chaos and exhibition of nudity. We now idolize idleness and immorality.  What do we gain from open vulgarity, open nudity, the spread of shamelessness? For me  BBNaija is an abomination.

“It’s not a talent show because it does not promote real development in any sense of the word.”

It is just a show in which some adults gathered in an enclosed place and allowed to do whatever entered their heads.”

“Fine, there are many other bad things going on everywhere, including kidnapping, banditry and the impunity of thoroughly corrupt political elite across all party lines, but destruction/distortion of values is one of the most vital of steps towards all these other societal vices.

“Those against the Federal Government plan to ban the show  are all benefiting from it one way or the other while the social and cultural norms of the society are being eroded.

“Even the devil will condemn that show. I don’t watch it but comments from social media indicate it is all about immorality. When young people condemn it, then it really has to be bad.

“The programme should be banned. This freedom to do whatever is the foundation of the decay in the polity.

“Pastors and imams should speak up against the show. The Qur’an and the Bible clearly teach against everything that is being openly demonstrated in the Big Brother Naija house.

“It is misleading the youths. Awarding millions of naira to young people,  awarding free cars and making young ones to salivate back home, wishing they had something like that sudden wealth, which is totally wrong.”
