Man dies in Christmas Day accident

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra has reported an accident at Umuokpo, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra that has claimed the life of a male passenger, on Christmas Day.

Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, Anambra Sector Commander of the corps, confirmed the accident in Awka, on Saturday.

According to Irelewuyi, the accident occured at about 4 a.m along Awka-Enugu Expressway and could have possibly been caused by fatigue.

He said, “The accident involved an unidentified driver of a blue Passat Volkswagen Wagon with registration number: BEN658TP.

“Eyewitness report reaching us indicates that due to fatigue, the driver of the vehicle slept off while driving and crashed.

“Twelve persons, comprising two male adults, a female adult, four male children and five female children were involved in the crash.

“Six persons sustained some degree of injuries.

“They were taken to Princeton Hospital, Awka, by FRSC rescue team, where a male passenger was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.”

The FRSC official also said the body of the deceased had been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.

The Sector Commander sympathised with the family of the deceased and, in the same vein, urged motorists to ensure they observe rest periods when traveling to avoid getting tired.

About eight people, according to Yusuf Abdullahi, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Bauchi, have been confirmed dead in a road accident that occurred in Bauchi on Saturday.

Abdullahi said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Sunday.

He explained that the accident which involved an Opel Vectra car with plate number AA 954 GYD and one Tipper Mercedes Benz with number plate NIN 279 SA, happened in Goltukurwa village along Dass-Bauchi road at 9:30 pm.

Personnel of the Corps arrived at the scene in seven minutes to clear the site. The accident was due to to overloading, speed violation and head-on-collision.
Nine people were involved in the accident, two males, six females and a male child.

While all the eight passengers lost their lives, the driver, Abubakar Mohammed, remained unscathed.

The FRSC boss disclosed that his personnel had cleared the obstructions at the crash scene and had transferred the corpses of the deceased to the General Hospital, Dass.

“This is the December period and we have always been sensitising motorists in the state about the dangers associated with over speeding and overloading.

“I want to use this opportunity to plead with motorists to always be conscious of all traffic rules and regulations as well as weather conditions before embarking on their journeys.

“They should also remember that only the living souls, not the dead, would live to celebrate the Christmas and new year festivities,” he stated. (NAN)

Four Corp members have reportedly lost their lives in a car accident in Yobe, after concluding their three-week orientation course in Taraba State. Others sustained injuries.

The deceased corps members include Mohammed Ali – TR/21C/2269; Job Gabriel – TR/21C/1655; Auwal Salisu Bashari – TR/21/2988 and Audu Sani Tata – TR/21C/2302.

It was gathered from the Yobe State office of the NYSC that the accident occurred on their way to Yobe State from the NYSC orientation camp in Jalingo, Taraba State, where they underwent the 2021 Batch ‘C’ Stream II Orientation Course and were redeployed to Bauchi and Yobe states.

The Yobe State Government and management of the National Youth Service Corps have commiserated with the families of the deceased Corp members.

Governor Mai Mala Buni in a statement by his spokesperson, Mamman Mohammed, said their death was tragic and painful. He consoled their families, friends and relations.

“It is painful losing these young men at their prime but as faithful, we have to accept it as the will of Almighty Allah which is destined to happen at this time,” he said.

Yusuf Abdullahi, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Bauchi State, has confirmed the death of about 16 people in a road crash that occurred in the state on Sunday.

Abdullahi said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Bauchi.

He explained that the accident which involved an articulated  truck and one other commercial Toyota Hummer bus had occurred in Bambal village on Kano-Jama’are Road at 7:00 p.m.

The sector commander, who explained that his personnel took about seven minutes to arrive at the scene to clear the site, attributed the accident to speed violation.

“Sixteen people are involved in the crash comprising 10 males and six females and all the people onboard lost their lives to the crash.

“The Hummer bus burst into flames after it ran into the truck and no single soul survived the crash.

“Some people were burnt beyond recognition inside the Hummer bus,” said Abdullahi.

The corpses have been deposited in the morgue of  Kiyawa General Hospital on Kano-Jama’are- road for identification.

The Sector Commander advised motorists to always take heed to traffic rules and regulations while plying the roads.
