COVID-19: Clubs banned, indoor events restricted to 50 in FCT

COVID-19: Clubs banned, indoor events restricted to 50 in FCT

The increasing cases of Covid19 has sent a wave of panic to the Federal Capital Territory Administration FCTA, leading to implementation of strict regulations as residents celebrate the Yuletide.

Secretary, Health and Human Services Secretariat in the FCT, Dr Abubakar Tafida in a statement Saturday in Abuja said the Administration was dismayed at the attitude of residents towards implementing simple measures that offer protection against being infected by the COVID-19.

“The FCTA’s deployment of more resources – health workers, funds and materials to control the disease, can only be successful if the residents of the FCT play their part, especially during this festive period that has increased social interactions and travel.

Therefore all residents of the FCT are being called upon to take action to protect themselves and their loved ones against this pandemic. As such it is critical that scientifically proven actions that prevent the COVID-19 disease must become our habit.

“Consequently during the Christmas and New year celebration period, the residents of the FCT are urged to practice the following measures as advised by the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19, which will be enforced by FCTA;

“Any gathering in excess of 50 people must be done in open spaces. Street parties are discouraged. All night clubs and related activities are banned during this period.

“Indoor religious congregation should be limited to 50% capacity with full compliance to public health social measures such as physical distancing (2 metres apart) and use of face masks, etc.

“The use of facemask and hand sanitizer for both the vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals at all times while in public spaces should be strictly adhered to.

“The current status of the COVID-19 in the FCT is worrisome. The cases so far in December as at 24th are 2,591 which is 1,028% increase of the 252 cases confirmed in November 2021. In addition, hospital admissions for COVID-19 have increased by over 634%, from 35 in November to 222 so far in December.

Also, the number of active cases being treated in the treatment centres and at private homes rose from 130 at the end of November to today’s figure of -2,352(1,809%) increase. About 25% of all cases over the months were between 30 to 39 year olds. Unfortunately, all COVID-19 deaths in December 2021 have occurred in unvaccinated persons.

“The FCTA has continued to put in place measures to control the increase in cases and prevent deaths, in conjunction with the Federal authorities and developmental partners. Scientific data has shown that a very important tool to control this pandemic is herd immunity, which is only possible when at least 70-80% of the FCT populace is fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Thus the ongoing vaccination programme that aims to vaccinate at least 1.5 million residents of the FCT by January 31, 2022, using 283 vaccination teams located in public and private Hospitals, markets, religious places, shopping malls and other locations with high human volume.

“FCTA urges residents to avoid crowded places, wear face mask, wash hands frequently, get vaccinated, go for laboratory and get tested if exposed or have symptoms and comply with all relevant advisory. Finally, being a caring government, FCTA has put in place the machinery to enforce all non-pharmacological COVID-19 prevention measures”, the administration added.

Top presidential aides test positive to COVID-19

COVID-19: Clubs banned, indoor events restricted to 50 in FCT

There’s panic in Aso rock as some presidential aides have reportedly tested positive to coronavirus and are currently being self-isolated.

Reports have it that those affected include the permanent secretary in the State House, Tijani Umar; the President’s Aide-de-camp (ADC), Yusuf Dodo; his chief security officer (CSO), Aliyu Musa, and his senior special assistant (media and publicity), Garba Shehu.

They were confirmed positive during the week.
Also, Minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed, is reportedly also down with the virus.

However, they’re not seriously affected by the virus as they are fully vaccinated.
.

The report quoted the presidential spokesman, Shehu as saying: “I have no confirmation of the cases you mentioned, but yes I have been afflicted by the mild variant of the COVID-19. I felt okay from the beginning, maybe because one had received all three jabs, and right now, I feel 100 per cent. I just finished my hour-long running exercise.

“But the strange thing about this ailment is that it is the scientists, not you, that will say you are okay. Right now, I’m taking my prescriptions and isolating and would go back for a test to ascertain if the virus is still here or it has left me. Thanks for your goodwill.”

Testing had recently been ramped up in the presidential villa in the emergence of the Omicron variant to ensure that the virus is contained.

Few days ago, the First Lady, Dr Aisha Muhammadu Buhari had a few days ago after returning from Istanbul, Turkey, ordered that her office be closed of and her staff proceed on indefinite leave.

It is believed that the order is meant to check the possible spread of coronavirus around the first family.

She had given a similar directive in the past when Covid-19 started to gain ground in the country.

When Shehu was reached over the report Saturday, he said: “Have you read the Premium Times report? What I said in it is the truth to the best of my knowledge. What is true is that I know about myself that I’m self-isolating and taking my medication, but I know of no other case.”

Terrorists’ rockets worrisome — FG

Terrorists’ rockets worrisome — FG

Following the launching of multiple rocket attacks in Maiduguri, Borno state capital, by Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) hours before the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, the Federal Government yesterday said it was worried about terrorists’ ability to fire rockets.

The Federal Government expressed worry on a day Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state cried out for help saying terrorists, armed robbers, bandits and criminal elements had invaded and taken over Kano forests.

It is pertinent to note that hours before the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Thursday, multiple rockets explosions rocked the capital with rockets hitting many houses around Ngomari, Bulumkutu and Ayafe communities near the airport. This reportedly led to a massive deployment of troops to combat ISWAP elements and to foil the attack by the terrorists.

Fielding questions from State House Correspondents after a security council meeting presided by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on the attack, the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Alkali Baba Usman said the ability of the terrorists to strike with rockets was worrisome.

However, the police boss said the terrorists failed to achieve their objectives with the rockets launch.

Flanked by the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the IGP said, “They are launching it in major towns, they are launching it in Maiduguri. It is a concern. And it has been seriously checkmated. There are efforts to continuously checkmate it. What they have done yesterday (Thursday), yes, they have done it, but to a large extent, they have not achieved what they have intended to achieve because of the situation the security agencies particularly the military put in place.”

When asked whether the security agencies have been able to trace the origins of the rockets, the IGP said it had been done before and after the firing incident occurred.

He said, “Yes, it had been done before and even after. Some of those who must have planned and thrown those rockets have been taken out.”

The IGP said that the security agencies were working at improving on what they were already doing “to ensure there is peace, law and order during the Yuletide period and beyond.”

He mentioned President Buhari’s marching orders to security agencies, which, according to him, are always the same.

Explaining, Baba said: “The marching orders are always the same, you have even told Nigerians the marching orders of the President. It has always been the same. There is no space, there is no tolerance to any threat to security. There is no sparing of any terrorists and there must be an intelligence gathering, there must be proactive prevention of crime and there must be checkmating of all those that are involved in criminal activities, whether it is terrorism, banditry or armed robbery or whatever and that is what we are trying to do to the best of our knowledge and ability.”

The Federal Government has also said there was no need to worry over the alleged leaked memo where security intelligence revealed that terrorists have planned to attack the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, during the festive period. It went on to explain that the nature of criminality in the southeast is the reason for the high presence of police on the roads.
However, Nigerians have been accusing security agencies in the southeast of harassing and extorting people at checkpoints.

Comparing the north and the east he said: “Where there are more people you have the problem of policing than where you don’t have. What we have in some of the states(in the north) is a big landmass without actually having too many people.

“In some spaces (in the east) we have too many people in a small place. That means there is human interaction and you need to have to police there much more than what you have where you don’t have that number of population.”

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who led the briefing on the outcome of the security meeting, gave assurance that there was no threat to safety and security in the Federal Capital Territory

Asked about the leaked memo of planned terrorists’ attack, Aregbesola said: “Abuja is secure and very safe. If there was a leak, as you mentioned, it could just be an operational alert that does not require any worry or concern. The Council has mandated us to assure Nigerians of their safety and enduring peace for the period of the festivities.”

The minister said the council had asked them to assure Nigerians that measures were in place to ensure their safety during the Christmas season and beyond.

“The message of the Security Council, through you to Nigerians, is that all measures for the safety and security of the Nigerian people and Nigeria are in place for a successful and happy celebration of the yuletide and the New Year,” he stated.

My wife threatened to kill my first wife, children, Man tells court

My wife threatened to kill my first wife, children, Man tells court

A 59-year-old surveyor, Adeoye Akintoye, on Monday appealed to a Customary Court in Igando, Lagos to end his marriage to Modupe, reason being that she threatened to kill his first wife and children.

“When we met, I told her I had a wife and four children, along the line, she got pregnant for me.

“She threatened to kill herself if I refused to marry. Initially, Modupe wanted me to divorce my first wife so that she can be the only wife but when I refused. She swore to kill her and the children,” he said.

He accused his wife of being mischievous.

”She came to my church with her child and introduced herself as my wife. I warned her not to. Because I did not want my church to know that I had a second wife because I am a deacon and a chorister.

”My church is against polygamy. I will be severely punished now that Modupe has exposed me,” he added.

Responding to the allegations, the 36-year-old trader, Modupe, accused her husband of infidelity.

‘I’ve caught him in bed with his other lovers. He starved me of sex and turned me to a punching bag,” she said.

The Court President, Mr Adeniyi Koledoye, adjourned the case until Feb. 10, for further hearing.
